Yes, Grand Avenue Software has this capability. If the appropriate Index Filters are installed and full-text searching is enabled, the Search for Documents page includes a File Content field for full-text searching. See the example screenshot below.

If the File Content field is present on the Search for Documents page, the system will search the contents of primary document files for any keyword entered there.

Tips For Using Full-text Search

Here are some things to keep in mind when using the full-text search capability:

  • It searches only primary document files (not additional files for documents)

  • It is a simple keyword search. It does not support logical operators or complex searches. Please see Why is a search using the File Content field returning different results than expected? for the detailed information about how full-text search matches keywords.

  • Full-text search should be used as an informational tool only and not relied on for accurate “where used” information. The search results are not guaranteed to be 100% reliable in every situation.

  • The full-text search capability is provided through Microsoft SQL Server, so Grand Avenue has no control over how it works.

Troubleshooting Full-text Search (On-premise installations only)

If you don’t see the File Content field on the Search for Documents page, below is a list of items to check.

  1. Are the full-text Index Filters installed?

    1. The full-text Index Filters must be installed into your Microsoft SQL Server instance. The steps are included in the Grand Avenue Software Installation Instructions, but it’s possible they were overlooked when your system was set up. Contact your IT group to have the filters installed.

See How do I verify that file content searching is working? for instructions on verifying whether the full-text Index Filters are installed and working correctly.

  2. Is full-text indexing enabled?

    1. Go to Configure System > Configure Full-Text Search and make sure full-text indexing is enabled. See the screenshot below.

  3. Is Document Content Searching enabled?

    1. Go to Configure Document Control > Configure Document Content Search and make sure you see “Document Content Search is currently enabled”.
